Fijiana hella represents her Indo-Fijian culture in ‘Welcome to the Bay’
She goes all out for The Town
The Bay Area is a particularly special place for Hip Hop. Known for its natural beauty, tech companies, and Golden Gate Bridge, Rich City music has a long history and distinct sound. It’s a mix of Hyphy and West Coast ElectroFunk that is omnipresent in songs like Too $hort’s ‘Blow the Whistle,’ The Luniz’s ‘I Got 5 On It,’ and E-40’s ‘Tell Me When to Go.’ RIP Mac Dre.
Fijiana pays her respects to her own and The Town’s culture with her recently-released ‘Welcome to the Bay.’ She’s Indo-Fijian, referring to people who were brought to Fiji as indentured servants in late 19th and early 20th century colonial times, and a Bay Area native.
In ‘Welcome to the Bay,’ Fijiana gets the calls from her friends to get outside because “There ain’t no money inside.” She’s soon rapping on an Indian beat and going off. The song has a Jazzy-Pop feel, but don’t get it twisted, it’s Bay Area all day and night. In the video, she’s got a lot of friends of all shapes and sizes that love to get hella cutty. In the part that is most outta pocket, Fijiana is getting her hair did while a BMW is drifting in the background. Soon, she’s hanging out the window and giving pure Bay Area vibes for this one.
In a statement about the video, Fijiana said, “As a brown woman in the Hip Hop space, I need to constantly pay respects to the Black people who've created such amazing art forms that I get the privilege of being a part of. And with that, Welcome to the Bay.”
