In today’s world of disposable music, a lot of artists don’t last for a year or two. Against all odds, Bobby Shmurda’s seven years in jail for conspiracy to murder, weapons possession, and reckless endangerment may have only increased the hype. Now he’s out of the Clinton Correctional Facilities and spending time with his family and working on new music.

Seven years is a few lifetimes in Hip Hop. In 2014, Shmurda’s ‘Hot N***a’ flew up the charts and the Shmoney dance made it far and wide including starring in an interlude on Beyonce’s tour. As Biggie said, “The sky was the limit” until it wasn’t.

As fast as he had become the King of New York, he crashed out even quicker. Shmurda and his crew, GS9, was arrested outside of Quad Studios in New York City after a year-long undercover operation. Depending on who you ask, the charges were either airtight or flimsy. Shmurda never really had a chance at a fair trial with his celebrity.

Time in jail is never easy for someone who is known because they have a target on their back. Shmurda got into a few fights and his girlfriend even got charged with trying to smuggle a weapon to him. Eventually, Shmurda took a plea deal that landed him seven years, but he got conditional release a year early.

Last week, Shmurda’s Instagram account shared a message the day before he was released. It read, “Thank you for remaining loyal and for riding this six-year sentence out with me. I love you all and look forward to seeing you soon.” Quavo of Migos said he was personally going to pick Shmurda up and make sure that he gets on stage soon. He even went as far to say that there’s no way that Shmurda will miss Hot 97’s Summer Jam [usually in early June]. “Some things are just mandatory and Summer Jam is mandatory.”
