Celebrating 20 years of BAPE’s Shark Full Zip Hoodie
Sneakers & hoodies go together like Run & DMC
In 1993, NIGO founded BAPE, which became one of the biggest names in international streetwear ever. While there have been a few famed items in Bape’s lines, nothing was ever as Earth-shattering and celebrated as the Shark Full Zip Hoodie.
Based on the military artwork on fighter planes and battleships that painted sharks’ mouths on the front of their vehicles, BAPE’s Shark Full Zip Hoodie is now celebrating its 20th anniversary with a few new colors and matching Shark Sta sneakers. There are also a few new Shark T-shirts found in the online stores.
NIGO loved the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes so much that he named his brand, A Bathing Ape, after it. BAPE also is a reference to a Japanese saying, “A bathing ape in lukewarm water,” which means that people have stayed in their hot bath too long so now the water is cold. This was a pointed joke at the opulence of Japan’s younger generation, BAPE’s biggest customers.
Even though NIGO severed ties with BAPE in 2011, he is still associated with the brand, and the celebrated Shark Full Zip Hoodies.
