On October 7, Japan’s B-boy Shigekix and China’s B-girl 671 won the men’s and women’s gold medals in Huangzhou’s Asian Games 2023. With the gold medal victory, the two dancers are now automatically qualified for the Breaking competition at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

Shigekix beat Korea’s Hong10 by a single vote in the hotly-contested final. 671 held off Japan’s Ami to win her gold medal. The judges scored the battles on creativity, technique, personality, performativity, musicality, and variety. 45 contestants starred in the first-ever Breaking championship, which was then whittled down to two.

“I’m just happy about the championship, winning the gold medal,” said Shigekix afterward. “Mentally and physically it was not easy, but I managed to channel what I could into a good performance here.”

With less than a year to go before Paris, these B-boys and B-girls are going from dancers to athletes in hopes of winning the Olympics.
