Seven years ago, a 47-year-old Korean woman slid on a leopard-print skirt and high heels while getting ready for a night out on the town with her friends. When her girls showed up, they were wearing fanny packs, visors, and mismatched outfits, which was a light-hearted take on the dress code of Korean Ajummas - middle-aged women. The women went back inside and dressed up like her friends and they had a ball painting the town red that night.

Soon, the friends became Ajumma EXP, a crew that has been doing flash mobs around the San Diego area for the past seven years. Their motto [from their website] is simple, “Loud, proud, and comfortable. Ajumma's iconic fashion sense is rooted in our desire to live with ease while protecting ourselves from the sun - no tans!”

In 2023, 30 women donned pink tracksuits and caught the attention of everyone going by. For 2024, they had to get bigger and better, so with 45 women [not just of Korean descent], Ajumma Exp made it to Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Fashion Valley Mall, and the baggage claim at San Diego International Airport to dance to Rihanna’s ‘Please Don’t Stop the Music.’
