Ai Weiwei flips the script on the Nike swoosh
Expect the cease-and-desist letters to arrive anytime soon
Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has made a career out of flipping the script and shattering norms in the art world. One of his most famous works, the aptly titled Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, reframed destruction as preservation when he destroyed a 2,000-year-old relic under the guise of art.
Now, Ai Weiwei has his sights set on tabletop objects again with his limited edition collaboration with Avant Arte titled Coloured Vase. Each nickel-plated vessel is stamped with an upside down Nike swoosh, symbolizing a collision of ancient craft and global commerce. Produced through meticulous metal-spinning and finished in tinted lacquer, the vases come in red, blue, green, silver, and gold. Each vase will sell for around US$1,500.
Few companies guard their logo or copyrights as fiercely as Nike since they are the number one shoe company in the world by a large margin. They are litigious to say the least, and now that word has gotten out about Ai Weiwei’s plans, Nike’s lawyers will soon be knocking on the doors with their cease-and-desist letters. Knowing that this will only amplify the pieces, Ai Weiwei’s Coloured Vases should become even more valuable, underscoring his genius for transforming conflict into commentary.
