On Sunday, July 12, a huge blaze engulfed Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar in Bangkok, Thailand in a matter of minutes and caused at least 27 deaths, while eight other customers have been critically injured. Videos from the incident showed people running out of the bar screaming while a fireball shot out of the doorway.
Today, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site and said that most of the dead were victims of smoke inhalation found in the bathrooms as they sought refuge. He said a musician stated that he saw smoke coming out of a circuit breaker right before the power went out and an explosion filled the venue with smoke instantly.
Even though firefighters were able to get the fire under control within minutes, it was still too late for many. Over the years, officials have promised to improve fire and electrical safety standards, but in Bangkok with so many bars, enforcement is rare.
