Death Row Records pops up in Tokyo
The record label is selling official merch that never made it to Japan
Death Row Records is one of the most notorious music labels in Hip Hop history. For a limited time, a pop-up shop has appeared at Universal Music Store in Harajuku, Tokyo, selling official merch that never made it to Japan.
Starting in the early 1990s, Death Row had 2Pac, Dr. Dre, Snoop, and a host of other West Coast legends signed to the record label. After releasing Dre’s The Chronic album, things fell apart as disagreements between Suge Knight, the label’s founder, and the artists, hampered business. Over the years, Death Row has been linked to multiple murders, money laundering schemes, and bankruptcies.
In 2022, Snoop gained control of the label and has been putting out new artists as well as re-releasing older albums. For the pop-up in Harajuku, there are t-shirts from Dr. Dre’s The Chronic album as well as hoodies, tote bags, and caps from the “world’s most dangerous record label.”
Death Row Records Pop-Up store lasts until March 3 at the Universal Music Store in Harajuku.
