Balming Tiger’s vibes are irresistibly magnetic on ‘Oui’

Funk, psychedelic experimentation & creative chaos

With a rotating cast of 11 members, Balming Tiger never sounds the same twice. Their latest album, Gongbu, is a soulful and chaotic trip through a fictional research institute where the boundaries between the conscious and subconscious dissolve.

The album’s funkiest detour is ‘Oui,’ a groove-heavy cut packed with magnetic psychedelic experimentation. Trying to explain the video feels a lot like deciphering lyrics such as “Chew like a taffy strip / Brazen like a larvae flip.” The words technically fit together, but understanding them is another matter entirely.

Then again, Balming Tiger has never been interested in making things easy to explain. A bride wandering onto a balcony while one maid carries another? Omega Sapien accidentally performing a rectal exam during a wrestling match? On paper, these ideas sound absurd. In the world of ‘Oui,’ they feel perfectly natural.

That freedom is what makes Gongbu such a compelling listen. The album is a glimpse inside the minds of 11 creatives who refuse to be boxed in by genre, convention, or visual identity. They follow their instincts wherever they lead, and as long as the result is funky, unpredictable, and unforgettable, it sounds exactly like Balming Tiger.
